For the first time ever in the southern hemisphere, Sydney will play host to the 2023 WorldPride event, touted as the largest global event in NSW since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Today, organisers announced the festival will run from 17 February to 5 March 2023 to coincide with the usual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras season.
On top of Sydney’s regular Fair Day, Parade, Party and Laneway Festival, Sydney WorldPride will be producing additional landmark events including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies which are currently slated to take place in The Domain with 25,000+ attendees.
There will also be a First Nations Gala Concert, a Human Rights Conference, a Pride March across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for an estimated 50,000 participants, and a Closing Party at Bondi Beach for 10,000+ partygoers.
Organisers have also announced the official look and theme for the 2023 event as GATHER DREAM AMPLIFY today, promising a mixed line-up of both local and international headline artists across all events.
Festival Creative Director Daniel Clarke says the new theme represents a call to action for commitment to global equality and inclusion, asking people to gather at the event, to listen and to dream about the future and how to make it a reality.
With support from the NSW Government, Destination NSW and Sydney Mardi Gras, WorldPride are looking to deliver a ‘show stopping world-class event that highlights the diversity, inclusivity, creativity and innovation the Harbour City is known for’.
Sydney Gas and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO, Albert Kruger says, “In 2023, Sydney Mardi Gras and Sydney WorldPride will introduce the world to our glittering LGBTIQ+ communities, giving our diverse First Nations and Asia Pacific people the opportunity to share their pride on a global stage. The event will also take place on the 45th Anniversary of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, giving us a much needed cause for momentous celebration. We look forward to hosting a program of fantastic events with Sydney WorldPride in 2023 and look forward to everyone joining us as we unite in pride.”
