In a recent media release, Opera Australia has revealed the performance information for the New Year’s Eve Opera Gala on Cockatoo Island.

The inaugural event will be held in addition to OA’s annual NYE opera performance in the Sydney Opera House.

Presented in collaboration with the Sydney Harbour Federation, the two-hour concert will be hosted by Jonathan Biggins with Tahu Matheson conducting a full orchestra.

The opera classics will be performed in the open air of the world heritage site. The special event will feature a collection of some of the country’s finest singers including Stacey Alleaume, Natalie Aroyan, Chanyang Choi, Diego Torre and Luke Gabbedy.

Commencing at 8pm, the outdoor opera gala will also allow attendees to enjoy stunning views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and city skyline alongside the NYE fireworks display.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said the additional performance will allow the people of Sydney to have more New Year’s Eve celebration options after months of lockdowns and limited live events.

“We’ve all been starved of live entertainment so we’re inviting everyone to come and celebrate New Year’s Eve with us, to say farewell to 2021 and its lockdowns, and embrace the beginning of a fresh and invigorating new year,” Terracini said.

Bookings for the event include the ferry fee to and from Cockatoo Island with the ticket to the performance. Attendees can also elect to add a three-course pre-performance dinner or post-show midnight party tickets to their booking. Additional food and beverage options will be available throughout the performance.

Tickets to the traditional experience of Opera Australia’s annual NYE event at the Sydney Opera House are also on offer. The performance of La Bohème will be held in the Joan Sutherland Theatre. The show is set to feature the Opera Australia Orchestra conducted by maestro Lorenzo Passerini.

The show’s interval also perfectly aligns with the 9pm fireworks so that attendees can truly experience the best of Sydney’s NYE celebrations with lavish views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
