Opera Australia is set to welcome renowned international performing arts leader Fiona Allan as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Tasked with navigating Opera Australia through the depths of a post-pandemic world, Allan’s sights are set on reinforcing the company as an ‘industry leading, twenty-first century performing arts organisation’.

Allan will return home to Australia from the United Kingdom, where she’s led various performing arts organisations – including Birmingham Hippodrome, lovingly known as the UK’s ‘busiest single theatre’.

Before moving to the UK in 2008, Allan was Chief Executive of Sydney Film Festival, senior producer at Sydney Opera House and General Manager of the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne.

As one of Australia’s largest performing arts companies, Opera Australia is poised to help rebuild the arts sector by creating jobs and kicking the action off.

Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini AM said he’s really looking forward to this new era for Opera Australia.

“I’m looking forward to working with Fiona to consolidate all the hard work that’s been done to keep the Company going through this pandemic and emerge as a stronger entity on the other side,” he said.

Allan will take over from outgoing Chief Executive Officer Rory Jeffes, who announced his intention to stand down from the position in February.

Terracini paid tribute to Jeffes’ and his work in navigating Opera Australia through the ‘incredibly complex crisis of COVID-19’.

“I’ve enjoyed a very successful working relationship with Rory over the past few years, we’ve been through some very difficult and challenging times, as well as celebrated some great achievements,” he said.

Allan will commence her new role by the end of 2021. In the meantime, Jeffes will continue as CEO to ensure a smooth handover.
